Resumen

This thesis, which can be broadly defined as an oral history project, hopes to make a small contribution to the limited but growing literature on those who had to flee Chile in such circumstances. Based on a series of interviews, it examines the experiences of some of the Chilean exiles who resettled in Britain. Part I will begin by putting Chilean exile in historical perspective in Chapter One, before conducting a literature review in Chapter Two. This will be followed in Chapter Three by an outline of the method used for interviewing and analysis. Part II contains the analysis of the interviews. It begins with a brief introduction to the overarching theme of the analysis; the impact of exile on individual and collective identity. It is then divided into three chapters each looking at a different aspect of the way exile impacted on individual and collective identity in the testimonies I heard.
